«How might we help children (8-12 years old) build up resistance against disinformation by teaching them media literacy skills through an educational video game in primary school, so they can prevent the consumption of misinformation in the future.»
Unmasking Fake News Innovation Journey
Sergi, a young boy, is scrolling down his Instagram page and finds a post related to COVID. Without validating if it is true, he shares it with his community. Subsequently, his followers share it as well. Later, respected media accounts deny this now VIRAL information and the major health impacts this has had. Sergi, like many others is just another victim, he has never been taught how to build resistance against disinformation.
With INFODEMICS “Unmasking the Fake News” we aim to teach media literacy skills to kids with a dynamic and engaging video game. Players are spies that must dismantle a gang that is spreading fake news. They compete against their peers, go through different missions and earn points. Furthermore, the game gives them insights into the various tenets of disinformation avoiding this kind of behavior in the future.
