Fusion Point is an initiative designed to find innovative solutions to real-life challenges through interdisciplinary work
in education and research. We bring together students from business and law from ESADE, engineering and technology
from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and design from IED Barcelona Design University.

Prototyping the future of education

PEDAGOGY

Fusion Point is protyping the future of education!
We are not only thinking about now to address the
current demands facing academic learning, we put our
thoughts into action throught innovative pedagogical
initiatives. Every course gives us the opportunity to
implement and test novel tools and approaches
whereby multidisciplinary student teams work
together to generate creative ideas and concrete
innovative solutions.

We have developed several concrete research lines that
can help us better design and deliver our pedagogical
programs. As our courses are not lecture based, coaching
sessions with the student teams play an essential role.
We are also working towards building a program for
training faculty and other academic staff involved
in our initiatives.

RESEARCH

OUTREACH

Outreach activities play an integral role in the success of
Fusion Point. Both our pedagogical and research efforts
aim to break the walls between academia, industry and
society at large. All our courses begin with real-life
challenges we receive from external for profit and
not-for profit companies and organizations and end with
a proof of concept prototype. We also host workshops,
hackathons and other innovation-driven events.

Student projects powered by Fusion Point

Fusion Point currently has two signature courses: Challenge Based Innovation (CBI) and Interdisciplinary Innovation Project (I2P).
CBI focuses on finding application to real-world problems for CERN-developed tecnologies.
In I2P students work on a company innovation challenge, delivering a validated prototype as a final outcome.

WELL2GO
TEAM PLANCK

Team Planck focused this solution on improving public health by providing safe access to water by monitoring and maintaining water points in northern Ghana.

ELECTREE
TEAM BOHR

ElecTree is the first modular extendable plug-n-play intelligent grid solution designed to optimize electricity distribution in situations of scarce energy. It was conceived mainly for use at refugee camps, but its applications extend well beyond this realm.

CORTEX
TEAM WU

CORTEX is a decentralized and distributed network that keeps safe and verifies individual academic records. CORTEX is a private blockchain with only an academic purpose, in which the courses approved and degrees obtained by a student are recorded as transactions in the student personal profile.

WATERWALL
TEAM MERCALLI

Waterwall looked at how household grey water could be turned into drinking water. The result is Water Wall, a home water management system that features three filters: a sand filter, an activated charcoal filter, and — last but not least — a plasma filter. These filters allow one to use 80% of grey water and also to analyse users’ water-consumption patterns.
